Two days to go until NetEase launches hero-shooter Marvel Rivals and there's been a slew of announcements and trailers dropped this week ahead of launch. If you missed yesterday's post showing off two new heroes and the official launch trailer, make sure to check it out. Today, we'll be looking at the newest post from the team looking at how the F2P game will be monetized.
Honestly, since it was announced, Troy and I often said that they only way we felt NetEase could screw up this title given the IP was through its monetization. I'm happy to say that based on what we know so far, it doesn't look like that's going to happen.
The team is holding true to its initial promise of all heroes and maps being free. Solid choice. Only cosmetics will be sold and they offer no stat bonuses whatsoever. It's all about visual changes.
Marvel Rivals will use two primary currencies: Lattice (the cash shop currency you can buy) and Units, which are acquired in the battle pass, through achievements, and via in-game events. Lattice and Units can be exchanged at a 1:1 rate.
At the base rate, Lattice will cost you a penny a piece, so if you see something in the cash shop for 1800, that'll cost you $18, not counting any discount given for buying Lattice in larger bundles.
Cosmetics themselves will be sold in bundles which typically include 5 items. You'll get a skin (costume), an MVP animation, an emote, a spray, and a nameplate in a bundle. Yes, you can usually buy the items individually, but the bundle offers a discount, of course.
Here's the breakdown of bundle pricing (with the obligatory "discount" advertised:
Battle Passes will be your typical offerings. A free track and a premium track (bought with Lattice) offer a myriad of rewards and the "Season 0" pass will be about half the price of a normal season pass and thus, have about half the rewards typically planned. That means you can expect to pay about $10 for "Luxury" season battle passes come Season 1.
Interestingly, you do NOT have to rush each pass. You can still gain progress on any season pass you have purchased, even if that specific season has come to an end. Great choice in my book. We'll need details on this one, but I expect you would have to select which pass you would like to progess in if you own multiple passes.
Free cosmetics will also be available.
What we do not know yet, and is still of interest to me, is the bundle pricing for Lattice. I am almost sure the team is going to make those bundles offset in price when compared to cosmetic bundles so you always have just a few Lattice left over for that next purchase, we'll see for sure soon.
I've added a few full character reveals the team posted from characters teased in yesterday's trailer below. There's also a nifty launch collaboration with Fortnite planned if you play both games. Gotta get all those gliders, right?
