Here's yet another example of me loving solo content being added into MMORPGs or multiplayer games, even shooters. I'm not even going to hide my love for it anymore. I'm fully embracing it. Don't get me wrong, I love group content too, so I'm not the type of player that ONLY does things solo, but I love the OPTION.
Content that CAN be done solo or with a group is even better, and that's exactly what the new Destiny 2 feature "Solo Ops" does. While today's "This Week in Destiny 2" blog reviews the Vesper's Host Race event, a new challenge for content creators, and has a full section about Tonics, I'm going to focus on the "new" coming when Codename: Frontiers arrives next year.
Solo Ops will be a new short-form content for individuals or fireteams to tackle. Each operation should last about 10 minutes, and the difficulty of the operation can be modified with Challenge Customizations. The rewards will continue to improve, too. It's another way to gear up and I'm a fan of being able to do them alone or with others. It's almost exactly why I have enjoyed the addition of Delves in World of Warcraft's The War Within.
The mode isn't just an "addition" though. It's actually aimed at addressing a problem in Destiny 2. That problem is that you either have to do time intensive solo activities for advancement, or engage in more short form events, but then you're competing with others for the advancement gear. Solo Ops solves this. It's a shorter activity for when you don't have time, it still is meaningful for character advancement, and it can be done alone if you like. In fact, the mode will not use matchmaking, so if you want a group, you need to find it yourself.
Check, Check, check.
How do you make replayability fun though? The team is going to use the Challenge Customizations to start, but they also plan to introduce optional objectives that you won't know about until you enter the mode. Interestingly, the team will also test a new "random respawn" system in Solo Ops. In short, each playthrough should feel somewhat different.
I love the concept...but as with other Destiny 2 things lately, I'll keep my excitement in check until I see it in action.
