In August 2021, Aliens: Fireteam Elite launched. It is a cooperative third-person shooter set in the Alien universe, developed by Cold Iron Studios and published by Focus Home Interactive. The $30 game is designed for multiplayer parties and players assume the roles of Colonial Marines battling against hordes of Xenomorphs and other hostile alien creatures across various environments. There’s a variety of weapons, classes, and abilities to play around with, and a story-driven campaign as well as a horde mode.
Upon release, Aliens: Fireteam Elite saw a peak of over 15,000 players on Steam and an average of more than 10,000. Today though, barely 400 folks played in the last 24 hours. That’s a shame, considering the game received almost 17,000 reviews — culminating in a “Very Positive” score.
Perhaps it’s because Aliens: Fireteam Elite has not seen an update since October 2023. Three months ago the game received a quality of life patch that included significant improvements to matchmaking and enhancements to the AI. The developers also announced a new studio head and a new creative lead. They promised ongoing quality of life updates for Aliens: Fireteam Elite while working on their next project, but we have experienced radio silence ever since. Cold Iron Studios even outlined future plans for community-requested updates, but has not delivered on any of them yet.
Now, over on Twitter the game’s official account has not posted since December 2023, and that was about a small hotfix added. The posts before that announce the removal of the game from PS Plus and the aforementioned late October update. Yet the Aliens: Fireteam Elite community is still a bit active on the game’s unofficial subreddit. They still love Aliens: Fireteam Elite and crave more content, but are they going to get any? It’s looking like the fans may not get anything worthwhile until the series sees a new entry…whenever that may be...
