In July, the Throne and Liberty team posted a detailed blog explaining how you could (or could avoid) spending money in the upcoming MMORPG. Most of their plans were pretty standard for the F2P gaming space. The teams detailed Lucent (the cash shop currency), Sollent (the currency used in-game to buy things from NPCs), and Ornamental Coins (currency gained from the battle pass and things like Twitch Drops used on cosmetics and boosts).
In a new post, the Amazon Games and NCSoft teams are really focusing in on Lucent because some players were a bit disappointed to see that the Throne and Liberty player auction house would be using ONLY Lucent.
Initially, the concerns became focused on the idea that you could simply buy Lucent with cash to purchase whatever gear you wanted to make your character more powerful. F2P players, on the other hand, wouldn't be able to buy a single thing from the cash shop unless they spent money on Lucent. The new post addresses both of those concerns.
First, sure, you could spend cash to get Lucent and buy gear from the Auction House. However, now we know that gear that is eligible to be placed on the auction house will be base gear only. If you've made an enhancement to the gear or upgraded it, you won't be able to list the item for sale. Second, gear from raids and dungeons cannot be listed either. Spending cash to obtain gear is only going to get you so far.
Second, F2P players will be able to sell on the auction house, too. Listing items doesn't require any Lucent. If you get a drop from an activity and you want to sell it, you can post it. If someone buys it, then you, as a non-cash-spending player, just earned Lucent and can use it to buy your own cosmetics, battle passes, or anything else the cash shop currency can be used to purchase. Lucent is also account bound, not character bound. This means you can farm Lucent through sales on one character, then spend it on the battle pass for your other character, if you like. Yes, battle passes are per character.
Rewards, like cosmetics, could be account bound or character bound, so you'll want to check ahead of time on those. Founder's Packs and other cosmetics purchased with Lucent will be account bound, while other cosmetics, like the ones obtained in the character specific battle pass, will be character specific themselves.
On the topic of Founder's Packs, when they were revealed, many players asked if the colors were locked. Short answer: no. You can dye these if you like. Just make sure you farm up the materials needed to do so. I've included an example of color and style combinations in the lead image above.
Throne and Liberty is expected to launch on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S on October 1st.
