World of Warcraft may be late to the housing game, but based on a first-look post published on the MMORPG’s site today, it seems like they’re really planning on doing it right. The post starts by discussing the various design pillars: allowing players to express themselves, making it social, and making it evergreen. They’d also really like for a lot of players to get a home. In fact, the system is designed so that anyone who wants a house can get it. They also don’t have to worry about losing it, even if they unsub for a while.
Interestingly, while most games that offer every player a house tend to go the route of putting the house in an instance and being done with it, World of Warcraft will be offering players houses in neighborhoods – similar to Final Fantasy XIV. The game will have two kinds of neighborhoods. The first, public, seems to be what most people think of when thinking of XIV housing. The second option, private neighborhoods, are created by groups – either friends or guilds. These neighborhoods are something they can work on together. The post doesn’t go into detail about how these things are handled server-wise, or how a group goes about claiming a neighborhood, but it’s safe to assume they’ve worked that out.
Another interesting feature of World of Warcraft housing is that a house is shared across a Warband, meaning characters belonging to one player can all share the same house – faction doesn’t matter either. World of Warcraft housing will also forgo lotteries, upkeep fees, and the like.
On an additional note, the WoW team shared another post discussing plans for 2025. The post is less of a roadmap a more of a high-level look at things, discussing housing, what’s to come in Classic, and plans to make the game more accessible to new players, among other things.
