About
EMPTY SHELL is an indie horror title developed by CC ARTS and published by Hyperstrange, released on October 16, 2023. The game combines action, adventure, and roguelite survival elements within a single-player experience. Players are dropped into a dark industrial environment located at a secret facility on a Japanese island in the middle of nowhere. Each volunteer signs a contract for a recovery operation without knowing many details about the mission beforehand. Although the facility was said to have been abandoned for decades, volunteers quickly realize something is wrong upon arrival. The narrative explores the dark secrets of the site's years of operation leading up to an accident with extreme consequences. Every time a player dies, they control a new volunteer sent to the location with randomized starting equipment. Each level features a new layout generated procedurally, ensuring different environments every time you enter or restart. The gameplay involves navigating dark corridors and cold rooms while facing abominable creatures in bloody fights. You must scavenge weapons, ammo, and gadgets to raise your chance to survive against enemies hunting each room of the facility. Managing your inventory is essential to make room for what you deem vital during these dangerous encounters. You can buy upgrades and devices to help you during fights while solving puzzles and recovering logs and documents. These recovered items include documents from the 1950s that unveil the stories of the people who worked there. The top-down perspective surrounds the player in darkness as they explore the generated maps. Total playtime for the main story plus extras is approximately 12 hours, offering a substantial experience within this survival horror setting.
