About
West of Dead is an action indie adventure title published by Raw Fury and developed by Upstream Arcade. The game was released on June 17, 2020, and features single-player gameplay. Players step into the role of William Mason, a dead man voiced by Ron Perlman, who awakens in Purgatory, Wyoming in 1888. This setting is described as a place filled with gun smoke, darkness, sin, damnation, wendigos, and witches. The world shifts chaotically based on the memories, culture, or beliefs of the souls passing through it. The gameplay combines fluid twin-stick controls with tactical cover usage in a grim environment. You will dodge behind cover while trying to outgun enemies within procedurally generated hunting grounds. The main story takes approximately nine hours to complete, while including extras extends playtime to twelve hours. A completionist run requires about twenty-seven hours of gameplay. The Wild West setting is presented with a dark tone that distinguishes it from traditional westerns.

A fine balancing act of challenge and intrigue, with stabiliser wheels courtesy of Ron Perlman's voice.

West of Dead brings some interesting ideas to the well-trod Rogue-lite scene, but lots of technical and design flaws make it hard to enjoy them.
