MMOBOMB
Jun 03, 2025
I loved Elden Ring. And after seeing the recent success of Elden Ring: Nightreign, FromSoftware’s latest release, I realized just how much I enjoy the kind of fast-paced action combat you find in Soulslike games. That got me thinking about the upcoming MMORPGs I’m most excited for: Chrono Odyssey, Blue Protocol, Soulframe, and Aion 2.
It seems like action combat is the future of the genre — meaning the days of tab-targeting are probably numbered.
Games like New World and Black Desert Online found success due to their combat systems. Players want to aim, dodge, and block on their own. They want control.
In my opinion, action combat is more challenging, rewarding, immersive, and engaging. You’re not mindlessly pressing buttons on a cooldown like in World of Warcraft and Final Fantasy XIV. In these tab-target MMOs, you press a key, lock on, and your character basically plays itself.
Now, what about games like Guild Wars 2, which mix soft targeting with active dodging and some skill-based aiming? That kind of hybrid system definitely has its place, though it’s not enough.
I think Elden Ring and the growing popularity of Soulslikes have pushed MMORPGs toward a new standard. Action combat isn’t just trendy, it’s modern. The future of the genre is fast and fluid.
