If ever there was a game series that had that massively multiplayer spirit, it’s definitely Pokémon. Players explore a vast world and go on adventures. They hone their skills and learn as they go along. Of course, there are bad guys to fight and good guys that will help you out. And, as an added bonus, the world is filled with fellow Pokémon trainers. It’s just that in single-player games they’re NPCs. Still, it easily sets up an MMO scenario where no one has to be “the chosen one” because everyone can be a Pokémon trainer.
With those things going for it, it’s no wonder that players are generally enamored with the idea of a Pokémon MMO. It’s also no wonder that the very few games developers have come up with are pretty popular despite not being Pokémon themselves. Nor is there any wonder that dedicated Pokémon fans have simply gone ahead and created MMOs of their own.
With this in mind, we’ve put together a list of MMOs that should scratch your Pokémon itch. As noted, it’s a pretty small list, and some of the offerings are fan-made. So, we can’t promise they won’t draw Nintendo’s ire at some point. Although, they haven’t yet.
Look, at this point, this one’s just obligatory. Palworld is a popular offering that allows players to catch monsters and have them fight. Of course, players can have them do a lot more than that in this game. That said, the devs are currently dealing with an angry Nintendo over it, so it will be interesting to see how that plays out.
One of the fewPokémon-esque MMOs out there with a focus on creature collection that isn’t a fan-made Pokémon game, Crema’s Temtem does a solid job of combining the MMORPG and creature collection experience. Casting players in the role of an up-and-coming Temtem tamer, the game turns them loose on seven islands located in the Airborne Archipelago where they will be able to capture, tame, and train 165 different creatures. The game features a story campaign set in an online world, character customization, and housing. And yes, players can compete against each other in battles.
PokéMMO is a fan-built MMO with a sizeable player base. It features several of the known Pokémon regions and a lot of Pokémon that players would be familiar with. Likes some of the other fan-based creations, it also has that retro vibe. That said, it doesn’t skimp on the MMO features, like character customization. It should, however be noted that it requires ROMs to work. Specifically, players need a ROM of Black or White.
If you’d rather not deal with the whole ROM thing and are looking to focus on collecting and PvP, the browser based Pokémon Pets might be for you. The game features live PvP battles, the ability to challenge NPC trainers, more than 520 maps, private messaging, and more.
The obvious difference between this and the other fan-made games in this list is the graphics. Rather than a top-down 16-bit vibe Pokémon MMO 3D offers a more modern look in a third-person perspective. Another feature that players might enjoy is that the game allows them to play as their trainer and the Pokémon – particularly in combat. The devs update the game regularly, so there should be plenty to keep players busy.
And there you have it. Five MMOs to let you live your best creature-catching and training life. Granted, several of them are fan creations, which always makes things a little iffy. But considering some of these have been around for a good while, it seems they’re here for the long haul.
