MMOBOMB
Jul 15, 2025
When it comes to MMOs, I don’t care about the story. Not even a little. I can appreciate a well-written quest or some decent worldbuilding, but miss me with the exposition. I’m mashing the spacebar through every line of dialogue anyway. You could give me a cutscene with Hollywood-level production, and I’d still skip it. I’m here to play, not watch.
Most MMO stories follow the same tired formula anyway: the world is ending, an ancient evil has returned, and I’m the chosen one. Except, so is everyone else. Hard to feel special when the entire server is also the hero of legend.
But those other players? They matter. MMOs are social at their core. We care about PvP, raiding, trading, theorycrafting. Create your own story.
And more importantly, it boils down to the gameplay loop. That’s what makes or breaks an MMO. I just need the combat to feel good. Then add solid boss mechanics, engaging dungeons, build variety, and deep community features — that’s what hooks me.
If I want a gripping narrative, I’ll fire up a single-player RPG built for it. In the meantime, I'll waste my time on MapleStory or RuneScape or Vindictus or TERA or Black Desert Online or ArcheAge or Lineage or Flyff. (None of these free-to-play MMORPGs are known for their narrative.)
