Since its launch, things haven’t exactly been great for Splitgate 2, which, according to some player reviews on Steam, failed its primary selling feature: the portals. Some also complain that the game was unnecessary to begin with and that the devs would have been better off spending their time supporting the original Splitgate instead.
Whatever their reasons for being unhappy with the recently launched F2P shooter, players are.
The good news is that 1047 Games seems to have taken player input (and perhaps the mixed review score haunting them on Steam) to heart and has announced plans to rectify the situation, which include returning the game to beta status until at least early next year. During this time, they plan to rework progression, add more portals to the maps, fix monetization, and focus on classic game modes, among other things.
Of course, with good news comes bad news. And the bad news is that some people at the company are being laid off. The post doesn’t specify which team members will be impacted by this decision, but as the focus of the game is shifting back to development, we can probably guess it will be people in areas like community or marketing.
However, they do have a plan to keep the number of team members laid off as low as possible. As noted in their announcement, quite a bit of money can be saved by closing the original Splitgate servers, which cost “hundreds of thousands of dollars” to run over the last couple of years. As for the team members currently being let go, the company is offering them severance packages and support in finding new jobs. However, it seems the ultimate hope is to bring them back at a later date.
