If you’re a Wuthering Waves player who is up to date (and waiting patiently for the next update to bring us the Cyberpunk: Edgerunners crossover), remember piloting the Exostrider in a fight against the Threnodian, Aleph1. While typically seen as an eye-shaped black hole, the Threnodian took on the form of a mech for the fight as well, and we spent our time in a giant mech fight.
This meant that we couldn’t rely on our typical team setup to win. It also meant the devs of the free-to-play action RPG had to think differently about what the fight would be like, which is something they discuss in the latest entry into the Wuthering Waves Developer Deep Dive Series. The video covers what went into building the fight and the story around it, including everything from thinking about how to get us to that point in the story, how to engineer the mech fight so that it felt correct, and what kind of music and sound effects to use in the scene.
One example they gave on the technical front was designing the mech’s movement. Throughout the fight, you glide while using a broad sword. The other mech uses a lance, and you can definitely feel the difference. Moreover, it’s different from playing as any of the characters, who the devs point out would feel too floaty if given the same treatment.
