About
Card Shark is an indie card game published by Devolver Digital and developed by Nerial, released on June 1, 2022. The title falls within the historical adventure and simulation genres while offering a single-player experience. Players can purchase this game as part of the GOG Collection - Devolver Card Games 2-pack that also includes Inscryption. This specific bundle is available only during the Devolver Weekend Publisher Sale event. The gameplay focuses on cunning, intrigue, and deceit within an 18th-century French setting. You must learn to play your opponents better than you play your cards to succeed in this world of high-stakes tables. The game teaches new tricks such as card marking, false shuffles, deck switching, and false deals. Using these methods allows you to cheat your way to the top of society and buy entry into exclusive circles. As you progress from local card parlors to the King's table, you will uncover a conspiracy involving an unscrupulous group of scoundrels. A key rule is that you must not get caught, as fellow gamblers do not take kindly to cheats. The journey takes place across small towns, remote mansions, and luxurious lounges imagined by the Nerial team. Visual artwork is provided by Nicolai Troshinsky while an original score by Andrea Boccadoro accompanies every move. The main story length is approximately seven hours, with the total playtime reaching eight hours when extras are included. Completing all aspects of the game takes about nine hours. The narrative features dialogue from characters like Comte de Saint-Germain who warns against relying solely on learned strategies.

A fresh, high stakes take on card-based videogames, sure to appeal to more than just deck-builders.
EurogamerChristian Donlan
It reminds me of a story about Ricky Jay, the great and much-missed close-up magician and historian of magic. After a particularly dazzling piece of card control performed for a New Yorker writer, he was asked if there was anyone left in the world who would still play cards with him.

Card Shark features an attractive art style, subtle writing, and a promising premise. But I couldn’t get past my dislike of the core gameplay encounters and the endless teaching segments. I applaud the effort to pull together a unique concept, but the accompanying frustrations mean I have to discourage a sit-down at this particular table.
