Players manage resources such as wood, crops, ore, and fish to sustain their settlement through changing seasons. The single-player experience requires careful planning to outlast harsh winters and expand the village from season to season. Each villager functions as a distinct character with over twenty characteristics that determine their suitability for specific tasks. Some villagers may possess great physical strength while others excel in social roles, so assigning jobs based on these skills is essential. As the settlement grows, additional Vikings will request to join, and players can decide whether to accept them or reject them. Over time, established families will produce new generations that continue the lineage of the community. The game presents various environmental challenges including earthquakes, lightning strikes, storms, and blizzards that threaten the settlement. Players must prepare sufficient firewood and food stores to keep their people warm and fed during the long cold periods. Trade opportunities become available once a Trade Dock is constructed, allowing ships to arrive with cargo for exchange. Villagers can also crew vessels for trade missions provided there are enough people and beer to support the crew. Aggressive options are also available for those seeking glory through force rather than diplomacy. Raiders can attack foreign villages to plunder gold and silver while earning Fame points that unlock new bonuses in the Tree of Life. Training and strengthening Vikings ensures better chances of victory during these conflicts. Construction is unrestricted by grids, allowing players to build houses and monuments wherever they choose to maximize happiness. Customization extends to the appearance of Viking ships and houses through a Building Editor available in Early Access updates. Players can construct a Tavern for relaxation or invest in goat farming to produce wool and fabric for improved clothing. Spending Fame points unlocks additional buildings and bonuses that contribute to a flourishing settlement where villagers remain healthy and content.
