It could just be nostalgia talking. It probably is nostalgia talking, since it’s been over 20 years since I played the game. But it occurred to me recently that one of my favorite PlayStation RPGs might actually make for a good MMORPG. Some of you will likely remember The Legend of Dragoon. If not, it was a JRPG made by Sony.
The game is set in a fantasy world with three primary races: humans, dragons, and Winglies. The latter were, at one point, the dominant race, having made humans their slaves. But this didn’t last as the humans received help from the dragons and learned to become dragoons in order to defeat the Winglies and earn their freedom. All of this took place 10,000 years before the main game even starts, meaning there’s 10,000 years worth of potential storyline to play with right there.
This means that, technically, an MMORPG built in The Legend of Dragoon universe wouldn’t need to rely on the characters of the original game. Instead, it could deal with the Humans’ fight for freedom from the Winglies or the events anywhere in between. The point is that it could make an interesting universe for players to live in. And, some might give bonus points to the humans not fighting dragons for once.
Of course, the game wasn’t perfect. For one thing, it was very, and I mean very, on rails. You’re not out exploring the overworld like you can in other games. And some of the story beats could have been improved as well. That said, it was still a fun game set in an interesting world, and something that could easily be built on.
Granted, all players would likely be dragoons. But, considering the way the game was designed, with each dragoon having different abilities, it could still easily allow for a solid class system. Each of the dragoon characters in the player’s party had their own ability kit, after all.
Of course, MMORPGs are a huge undertaking, and new ones can be rather risky. In addition, it’s not like Sony’s really doing MMOs these days.
That said, with the popularity of gacha-style games, Sony could still make use of The Legend of Dragoon IP, building a roster of dragoon characters – or even dragons – for players to collect. I suppose a few Winglies could be added as well. Although they aren’t exactly the good guys.
Really, it would just be nice to see the IP again, as it would others. But, perhaps not as a remaster, or a remake of the original game, as has been done with other games. That often doesn’t work out well. But telling a different story in the same universe in some way – and in a way that players can potentially share, that could work, at least with this particular world.
But, as I mentioned, the large-scale games are time-consuming, costly, and difficult to make. And The Legend of Dragoon didn’t do as well as other JRPGs at the time. Still, having a solid structure to work from isn’t a bad thing, so long as it’s done properly. And, it would give new players a way to experience the world, since it’s a pain to try to play older games without having the related equipment. I personally think it's always good to find a way to share old stories with new people. Plus, I really wouldn't mind visiting the world of The Legend of Dragoon again, and this seems a great way to do it.
Unfortunately, it probably won't happen. But one can dream.
