Red Faction: Armageddon is a shooter, action, and sci-fi title published by Deep Silver and developed by Volition. The game was released on June 6, 2011, offering both single-player and multi-player experiences including co-op modes. Half a century after the Red Faction resistance and their Marauder allies freed Mars from the Earth Defense Force, peace is threatened again by a mysterious lethal force. The destruction of the massive Terraformer that supplies Mars with air and weather causes the atmosphere to turn chaotic, bringing super-tornados and lightning storms to the planet. Colonists flee to underground mines to build a network of habitable caves where they can survive the environmental changes. Five years later, Darius Mason operates a lucrative business from Bastion, an underground hub for colonist activity. Darius works as a miner, scavenger, and mercenary, taking on dangerous jobs while few sane people venture to the ravaged surface. He is tricked into reopening a mysterious shaft in an old Marauder temple, which releases a long-dormant evil and unleashes Armageddon on Mars. As settlements are torn apart, only Darius and the Red Faction can save mankind from the unspeakable threat below the surface. The game expands on the franchise with new challenges where players face infestation mode to survive waves of enemy hordes in a cooperative experience for one to four players. Ruin mode allows players to master tools of destruction in competitive and casual gameplay focused on destroying environments. The Nano Forge lets players unleash massive concussive blasts or reconstruct downed colonist defenses using Geo-Mod 2.0 technology. Players explore the Martian Underground to uncover the truth behind an ancient evil while battling across the devastated surface, beneath frozen glaciers, and over rivers of magma. Darius Mason watches as the surface is destroyed before seeking solace underground where a greater threat emerges against humanity. The battle takes characters across the storm-blasted planet and below it to confront the source of the danger.
